Izakaya 95 – 居九五

Konichiwa!

There are various eateries at “The Punggol Settlements” you have all the seafood restaurants occupying the ground floor and on the second floor you have the boutique restaurants/cafes.

Izakaya 95 caught my eye, a Japanese restaurant located on the second floor. They serve yakitories, a variety of Japanese dishes with an array of booze from draught beers on tap to Sake take your pick.

Izakaya 95

Ambiance is chill and relaxed, the all black decor, tea lights in lamps on the table gives the place a cool Japanese hipster kind of feel to it.
Come early to snag a nice table along the veranda to enjoy the sunset and a view of containers/shipping at Pasir Gudang, Malaysia. If your lucky you might see fireworks too (don’t ask why there are fireworks am not sure either).

Family Time

Overall, all the plates are tasty, flavorful, and consistent. There are plenty of choices to choose from but it can be a little overbearing when it’s the first time seeing the menu.

Fresh & thick slices of Salmon Sashimi ~ SGD12

Kawa Ebi ~ SGD10

Yakitori Platter ~ SGD14
Tori Reba (chicken liver) ~ SGD3
Mentai Cheese Fries ~ SGD12

The sake that we chose was extremely smooth, clean, crisp, light body with unami and nicely soft sweetness. A perfect food sake that is complementary to the flavors in the food.

Hakurakusei Tokubetsu Junmai Sake ~ SGD90

The service staff are friendly, attentive, cordial and efficient for how busy it was. Food comes out at a good pace.

Foie Gras ~ SGD 10 per skewer

Suntory Beer on Tap

Girls’ Night Out ~ Night Cap

I have since been here twice once with the family and the second with friends. Its a great place to chill out, relax and unwind after a tough day/week with family or friends.

Its Durian Season

June is the season where you will find an abundance of durian everywhere. The pungent aroma fills the air there is no escaping.

Recently my hubby found a contact who brings in fresh durians from a plantation in Malaysia into Singapore. He does delivery with a minimum order of 15kg. We decided to order a variety to try out.

Small Seed Durian

Small Seed Durians has a light aroma, fleshy, pale yellow flesh, creamy with a bitter sweet taste and of course as the name depicts it has a small seed.

Golden Swallow Durian

Golden Swallow Durians are very aromatic, interestingly comes always in a dual seed configuration, very bitter with a tinge of sweetness, when you bite onto it the creaminess oozes out and melts into your mouth. Its flesh is dark yellow and very fleshy too.

Mao Shan Wang Durian

Mao Shan Wang Durians are very aromatic too, rich in flavour, bittersweet, fleshy and creamy. Its flesh is a bright yellow. This is by far the best of THE best amongst the rest. Once you have a taste of Mao Shan Wang you won’t want any other type of durians…mmmmm

Mao Shan Wang ~ creamy & rich texture

Savouring the bittersweet

The Small Seed Durians and Golden Swallow Durians are sold at SGD7 per KG. Mao Shan Wang is sold at SGD14 per KG. Quote “Phelix from Tampines”.

Angelina Café Singapore

Bonjour! Bienvenue chez Angelina Café!

ShenWendys_AC_Menu

The much anticipated Angelina Café opened its door in Singapore on Friday 29 May 2015. Fortunately for me when we went there on Tuesday 02 June 2015 for dinner we weren’t greeted with massive long queue (which we heard from the staff due to the long weekend they had super long queues and the patrons were all disgruntled from waitin) and the lady in charge was able to let us pick a table we like for the night.

We wanted to order a bottle of champagne but were informed that they are still waiting for their liquor licence and thus in the interim no alcohol can be sold. To maintain the freshness and the quality of their pastries only a selection of pastries are made with limited quantities during the soft launch.

It was hard to decide what to have for dinner as everything on the menu sound so tantalizing, after much deliberations we decided on…

Pan Fried Scallops ~ Black venere rice, shellfish cream SGD 29.00

Penne, Spicy Tomatoo Concasse ~ roasted vine-cherry tomato, goat's cheese SGD 22.00

I like the overall ambience – makes you feel you have transported to a Parisian Cafe in the heart of Paris. The service staff are extremely friendly and attentive.

White Asparagus @ Paulaner Bräuhaus Singapore

Guten Tag! Jetzt ist Spargel Zeit! (It’s Asparagus Time).

White asparagus is one of my favourite. White asparagus comes from the process of etiolation which is the deprivation of sunlight. Soil is kept mounded around the merging stalk, depriving it of light. The plant cannot produce chlorophyll without light, thus there is no green color to the stalks. Furthermore they are considered to be slightly milder in flavour and a bit more tender then the green ones.

It’s a very popular late spring/early summer dish in Germany! The asparagus is usually boiled, drizzled with either hollandaise sauce or melted butter without compromising the orginal freshness and texture of the asparagus.

You can eat it plain or pair it with cured ham, smoked salmon, boiled potatoes sprinkled with freshly cut parsley and sliced boiled eggs. But most importantly in my opinion one must have a pint or two of Maibock beer to round up this delectable meal! Proßt!

If you haven’t tried it before or miss eating it head down to Paulaner Bräuhaus Singapore for your fix before the season ends.

Paulaner Bräuhaus Singapore is located at 9 Raffles Boulevard, #01-01 Millenia Walk Singapore 039596.

Neighborhood Thai Food ~ Chok Dee Mookata

Sawadee Ka!

Thai cuisine is one of my favourite and also one I can never get tired of.

Imagine my delight when I found one around my neighborhood. We use to frequent the place once a week for Mookata (means “pan pork” in Thai; is a style of Thai Steamboat originating from Chiang Mai) now we have cut it down to fortnightly.

The meats are seasoned with their special sauce and taste delicious! The soup broth tastes even more heavenly when the juices from the meat we cook trickles and mixes into the soup.

Each platter set cost SGD28 for 3pax (consisting of chicken, pork, fish balls, hot dogs, crab sticks, Tang Hoon, prawns, squid, tofu, liver, veggies and egg), you can add/top-up additional items when you have more people or just feel like eating more.

The most important item to me is the chilli! It has to be fragrant, tasty and SPICY providing an “ummph” factor. Their chilli definitely meets all the above requirement.

Looks “lethal” right the redness of the chilli?

The other dishes I had tried were…

Mango Salad – SGD 3

Squid Salad – SGD 5

Yom Woon Sen – SGD 5

Tom Yum Soup – SGD 5, Stir Fry Minced Meat with Basil Leaf and sunny side up SGD 4.50

All were equally sumptious. I categorize them as  my go-to “happy food” – I always feel contented and happy after eating.

Chok Dee Mookata is located at Block 445 Tampines st 42 Boss Junior Coffeeshop, if you happen to be in the area why not give it a try?

Eighty Days • Pizza Bar

Dieting doesn’t have to be boring with Eighty Days “Traveller’s Lunch Box” which consists of mixed salad + protein + carbo. The protein choices are grilled salmon, chicken or beef stew. For carbo you can pick either Japanese Rice or soba noodles.

Depending on how hungry you are you can pick more then 1 portion of protein. Price range from SGD6.90-12.90. Wash down your lunch with a cuppa hot Yuzu drink to cleanse your palate.

Their salads are also yummilicious.

Cheat days – indulging in bite size pizzas on top of the usual salad.

Eighty Days offers catering services, I have engaged them a couple of times for my office events and have received good reviews from my colleagues.

They are rather flexible and are able to customize your order to your requirements. The Catering Executive, Rosalind whom I liaise with is a very nice and helpful lady. You can check them out on Facebook ~ Eighty Days • Pizza Bar and arrange for your next catering.
